‘Beholden’ – acoustic guitar duo with Mike Walker out now!

Posted: October 27th, 2014

Beholden

Beholden, the duo’s debut album, is a new and exciting chapter in the guitarists careers. Walker and McCallum are both best known for their work on electric guitar. However, for this new duo they use four different acoustic guitars to re-imagine and re-sculpt their own original compositions and some well-known jazz standards into fresh shapes. Walker and McCallum admit to shared Influences from Pat Metheny to Bill Frisell, Bon Iver to Jerry Douglas and Gerald Finzi to Kelly Joe Phelps, and by embracing each other s musicality and wealth of experience they evoke a combination of chilled-out bliss and sublimated yearning, creating music that is a balm for the soul. Throughout the album, the duo explore space, spontaneity and beauty to create intelligent camp-fire music that is characterised by focus and restraint.

FREE download of new track!

In 2012 I was commissioned by the British Council to compose and record a piece of music for the Musicity project in Tokyo. The music would be available for people to listen to and download via smart phones at various listening posts as part of the Roppongi Art Night Festival (an annual all-night art festival started in 2009). Inspired by the Roppongi district, I created the track The Seventh Tree, which is now available as a free single download. The single features my Cinematic Orchestra band mates Phil France on bass and Luke Flowers on drums.

“An epic and beautiful piece of music, The Seventh Tree refers to the growth and destruction of Roppongi which was reputedly built around six trees, all of which have now been destroyed. The Seventh Tree is a compelling track that gets under the skin: reflective and yet powerful, with two contrasting sections re-imagined in different instrumentations and textures. The Seventh Tree plays like a speeded up film of Roppongi’s history  – it’s destruction during the Second World War and its subsequent growth into what is now a vibrant commercial district.”

I’m excited to announce that I have been given some funding by SACEM and ACE to collaborate with some French musicians – Laurent de Wilde and Laurent Robin. We will be playing some shows in France and the UK at the end of July 2013, with more shows later in the year.

‘Distilled Live’ – new album out now!

Posted: November 19th, 2012

Just over a year after the Cinematic Orchestra guitarist Stuart McCallum released his acclaimed Naim debut album of ambient jazz-electronica, the Mancunian’s distinctive and ethereal guitar playing headlines this new long player ‘Distilled Live’; captured live during the 40-date European tour that succeeded the release of his studio album ‘Distilled’.

‘Distilled Live’ opens with a new treat for studio album lovers. “What Is Beauty?” samples the soothing intonation of Indian philosopher Krisnamurti, whose teachings have deeply inspired McCallum’s music and outlook, resting upon a cradle of strings, driving bass and soaring modes from McCallum’s deft guitar playing. Although, in a contrasting running order to the original studio album, ‘Distilled Live’ features all the same high points including the minimal melodic groove of “dR Doctor”, the soaring momentum of “Inflight”, Part I and Part II of “Hillcrest” combined into one epic enactment and two exclusive as-yet-unheard compositions ‘The Wait’ and aptly titled closer ‘And Finally…’ available on the compact disc album.

Tracklisting:

  1. What is Beauty?
  2. dR Doctor
  3. Lament For Levenshulme
  4. Inflight
  5. Vital Space
  6. Hillcrest
  7. La Cigale
  8. Distilled

  10. And, Finally…             (cd bonus track)

10.             Inhale (iTunes bonus track)

Manchester Jazz Festival

Am really looking forward to the upcoming gig Matt&Phreds on July 19th as part of this year’s Manchester Jazz Festival! An eclectic 3 sets of original music, featuring some solo acoustic guitar, tracks from ‘Distilled’, new music with vocalist Rioghnach Connolly and the Prism String Quartet, and finishing off with a high energy, psychedelic trio featuring Manchester’s very own Mr Luke Flowers.
